Special Education Training

The special education training is designed specifically for interpreters who work in Illinois and are involved in interpreting Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

The training includes four units spanning six hours. In this training, participants will learn about the history, purpose, structure, and guiding principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a special education federal law. They will also become familiar with the different disability categories defined under IDEA and learn about the rights and protection for individuals with disabilities and their families.

This training also includes specific information about the Individualized Education Program (IEP), such as the various types of meetings, the composition of the IEP team, and considerations for interpreting during these meetings. Topics such as parental rights, procedural safeguards, assessment planning, goal setting, accommodations and modifications, placement options, and transition planning will also be discussed.

Checks for understanding or tests will be included throughout the training. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass the special education training. Participants will have access to a downloadable glossary of terminologies covered in the training and a list of resources and videos to explore.
